Location
i took this at San Diego Zoo.Time
It was taken around Mid Afternoon.Lighting
The lighting was quite overcast, but I had a very clear idea of what I wanted the final look and feel of the image to be.Equipment
I was using a Canon EOS 7D MK1 with a 70-200 F2.8L IS II, hand held, no flash.Inspiration
I had a very clear idea visualized in my mind, I wanted to work the image in Black & White using high contrast to really bring out the texture of this beautiful animal. At the same time I wanted to isolate the subject and capture it as a portrait to give the Rhino power and show the loneliness that has become inherent with the decline of the species. I was motivated by hearing that big game animals will be all but extinct within the next 20 years and this deeply affected me that entire generations will never get to see these beautiful creatures other than in photographs.Editing
Yes, lots! The original image had a keeper and a crowd in the background, even though I was using F2.8, due to the lighting I was unable to knock out the background as much as I liked so there were a few exposure, clarity tweaks made in Lightroom before bring the image over to Photoshop to separate the Rhino from the background, create a tintype feel to the lighter areas and then paint in some shadowing for dramatic effect. In my camera bag
My day to day bag includes: Canon 7D Mk1, 70-200 f/2.8L II, Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, Canon 85 f/1.8, Yongnuo YN600EX-RT Speedlite.Feedback
Have a clear idea of you want to achieve even if that means post processing with some fancy photoshop. Making the connection between what you visualize vs what you produce is always the biggest struggle but it is worth the perseverance to push yourself to achieve that connection.
