This is M81, Bode's Galaxy, and M82, the Cigar Galaxy. The two galaxies are within each other's gravitational pull, and are about 11.8 million light years from Earth. M81 is a spiral galaxy while M82 is a starburst galaxy. Messier 81 was first discovered by Johann Bode on December 31, 1774. Consequently, the galaxy is sometimes referred to as "Bode's Galaxy". In 1779, Pierre Méchain and Charles Messier reidentified Bode's object and listed it in the Messier catalog. Messier 82 was also discovered by Bode at the same time because they appeared in the same field of the telescope, and while it looks like a cigar in smaller telescopes, you can see the starburst region in this image.

I use an 11" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope as the "lens" and a astrophotography camera with a CCD sensor. This shot was taken in a program called Maxim DL Pro, where I stack and stretch the 15 to 20 images I take to get one image and them finish the processing in Lightroom. This shot is actually to images stitched in Microsoft ICE.
