Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Markham Fairground, regularly I have my photographic gear with me whether work day or weekend, maximizing opportunities of capturing shots.

Time

A usual work day morning around 8am, and this area is along my route to work. It's Winter and cold in the morning, but a good time to photo scenes as it's easier to find undisturbed spots (e.g. from footprints, etc.), especially when it wasn't overcast and the clouds might add some drama.

Lighting

The sun was just above the horizon, and a bit of drama in the sky through the clouds which was the background and attention I'd like to be embedded in the photo, the scene was luminated subtly so the focus will fall onto the fence and the sky. If the shot would have taken slightly later, the light from the sun would create strong and long shadows on the fences which I would then compose differently.

Equipment

It was shot with Nikon D7100, along with the Tokina 12-28mm F4 lens on the wide end, sat on a tripod low to the ground. I didn't had my remote release on me, so it was shot with timer, no specific filter either.

Inspiration

Generally I gear according to the type of photos or subject I plan to capture that day, which that day I had "fences" in my mind. I was cruising on route to work, looking for farm fences that would go well with snow-covered fields and clouds in the sky, and then I saw the long fences and flat open fields at the Markham Fairground. All the pieces worked together well as I took the low-angle shot.

Editing

Typically I spend more time touching up landscape photos over others, including the standard adjustments as well as others, however for this there isn't much beyond standard colour/contrast/saturation adjustments, and finished of with a B&W conversion.

In my camera bag

General & landscapes: Nikon D600 | Nikon AF-S 16-35mm F4G VR | Nikkor AF 85mm F1.8D | ND and CPL filters | Remote shutter release | Tripod | lens cleaning tools; Wildlife/Macro: Nikon D600 | Nikkor AF-S 200-500mm F5.6E VR | Nikkor AF-S 105mm F2.8G VR | Tripod

Feedback

Understanding lighting is essential to photography, always research and be prepared in advance, ensure to bring along the essential gears and be familiar of the strengths and weaknesses of each. Try different perspectives, angles, and etc., sometimes the best composition may be from a spot and angle you would never have thought of. Be adventurous but safety first, and keep exploring with an open mind.
