I just wanted to leave a quick note to say thank you for participating in my "Portraits on Location" challenge. While I ultimately chose another photo as the winner, this one was one of my 100 favorites in a field that was just shy of 2000 entries.

Behind The Lens

Location

I was actually only supposed to be the stylist for a shoot I was working on for another photographer on the french riviera named Julie Baillet. We shot in a forest trail close to her house in a little village in the hills above Nice called Colomar

Time

It was mid fall, the light was low and fading fast even though it was only around 3pm

Lighting

Julie had been shooting this spot very differently and we were getting ready to pack up the light was fading and the wind was picking up and the poor model Astrid was putting on a brave face but was shivering... so of course I had to spot the last shot, I laid flat on my stomach opened the aperture on my mamiya 80mm as wide as it would go (2.8) and had Astrid look up to the opening in the trees through which the light (and dead leaves) was falling on her

Equipment

I shot this on my Mamiya 645 AFD II with an 80mm lens and available light

Inspiration

This session was a month of prep work Caroline Hirondelle, our fantastic hair stylist presented her hair style ideas, our MUA Cricri Humblot did allot of research to match the hair event went as far as gluing moss on the models chest along the seems of the dress, Julie had asked me to come up with a look for the dress in which I had to include paper flowers a local bridal decorator had made, so i took a dress that was more or less the right color, and actually re-cut it on the model

Editing

I processed the RAW MOS file several times with different variations of brightness and contrast and then pasted the in to accentuate the "fairy dust effect" and I cloned some of my favorite "sparkles to accentuate the effect

In my camera bag

If given the choice I will shoot my medium format I usually have the 80mm f/2.8 and 150 f/3.4 lenses in there. I do usually have my canon 5dmkIII or canon 60d with the 24-105 zoom ready to go it's a descent range that allows me to shoot most situations, I also always keep a canon rebel t4i in the glove compartment of my car, it's light, it;s small I can fit my canon lenses on it and it's simple enough to use I can hand it to someone and have them shoot backstage and have descent photos

Feedback

Preparation was the big thing on getting this shot done. Hair, makeup, styling, choosing the model are all equally important in the result as that one moment that was captured... the flip side is once on set, this picture is an example of grabbing an opportunity on the fly, I laid down in the cold damp dirty leaves to get this shot but it would not have been the same from a different perspective. So simply put before the shoot PREPARE, PREPARE, and then prepare some more, and on the spot, be ready and willing and able to improvise, when working as a team in both cases effective communication is extremely important... For starters "i know you want me to style... is it ok to bring my gear and shoot?"
