Location
This photo was taken in fields near Speicher, Germany. Walking paths are common in the countryside. Winter leaves them pretty barren but they are still a good place to go for a stroll.Time
Even though it was becoming later in the day, it hadn’t gotten much brighter outside. When I woke up in the morning it appeared to just be cloudy. I left the house around 11 AM and things had changed a lot. A sudden drop in temperatures and the moisture in the air had frozen everything solid last night. As the day had progressed, the sun had apparently tried to make an appearance but the heat had created a fog of ice.Lighting
The fog gave a ghostly appearance to everything but it was the perfect natural lighting for the shot. The sun brightened the fog somewhat due to it almost being high noon, even though it couldn’t be seen.Equipment
This was shot with my old Canon T5 with a Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens. No other equipment was required.Inspiration
I take my camera with me on walks just in case I see something cool or get inspired. While walking in the cold, I saw a person struggling against the cold and disappearing into the fog. A single giant holly bush covered tree towered over her as she blew into her hands for warmth.Editing
I actually didn’t have to do much. I increased the brightness and the photo was perfect. I usually spend more time editing but this shot felt just right after the highlights were tweaked.In my camera bag
For a casual walk I usually bring my Canon EF-S 18-135mm and Canon EF 70-300mm lenses. I’ve since upgraded to the Canon 80D body but still use the same lenses. At night or for event coverage I bring my Manfrotto fluid-head tripod.Feedback
Always take a camera with you because amazing things can unexpectedly happen. Just because it’s not sunny outside doesn’t mean a gem isn’t waiting to be captured. The fog is perfect for ghostly and mysterious images. If you wait long enough, something cool might just appear briefly enough for you to capture it too.
