Behind The Lens
Location
Omo Valley, EthiopiaTime
Midday, at about 12pm, when the sun is just above everything else.Lighting
All natural lighting. The tribespeople all have a fear of flash and artificial lighting. They believe that each time a flash goes off, blood energy is being sucked out of their bodies.Equipment
Canon 5DM3, 100mm Macro lens...no tripods. No flash, reflectors or any other forms of artificial lighting.Inspiration
I am always attracted to people with dark skin and tribal themes.Editing
Minimal...just a little increase in sharpening and vignetting...then I converted this photo to Black and White...In my camera bag
Just one camera body, usually a Canon 5DM3. Lens wise I usually try to have a 100mm Macro lens (great for portraits), 50mm fixed lens and sometimes when I get a little crazy the 11-24mm wide angled lens. I think that's about all I carry...too much gear makes it very tiring and that affects my concentration...Feedback
Be very sensitive to other people's cultures and the models' well-being when photographing them. I have seen many photographers irritating the tribespeople with flash and then tribespeople pointing their spears or guns at photographers because they have had enough. In other locations, I have seen photographers chase Geisha girls down the streets in Kyoto and photographers jumping in front of other photographers' cameras during private shoots in Venice....
