Location
This Photo was taken at The Butterfly and Orchid Garden, Thames: North Island of New Zealand. This place is set up for Tropical Butterflies that are imported so is heated and humidified. Before you enter with your camera gear it has to have our camera gear heated so that they wouldn't fog up when we entered.Time
The Photo was taken in the morning which allowed the sunlight to create a consistent even level of lighting.Lighting
The Roof on the butterfly house created a filtered even light which prevented any areas being blown out. The problem this caused was that I had to increase the ISO to 1250 to get a fast enough shutter speed to stop any movement.Equipment
I use a Nikon D750 with a sigma 110mm Macro Lens mounted on a tripod to stop any movement.Inspiration
I love doing Nature photography and find it a challenge to capture that rare moment that stands out not only in your mind but of those that see it. When my wife and I heard about this place whilst holidaying in New Zealand we knew had had to go there. It is an amazing place with many opportunities to capture great photos.Editing
There is always some post processing. I use photo shop and do much of the editing in Camera Raw. All I needed to do was to ensure that the colours and contrast were true and not over saturated. I also cleaned that background to take out unwanted branches and leaves. In my camera bag
I have a Nikon D750 which is my only camera. My bag depends on what I intend to photograph. On this day I had the Sigma 110 mm macro which is also a good portrait lens. I always carry my multi purpose Tamron 28 - 300 zoom lens which allows the flexibility to adapt to many different situations. I do like to have the Tamron 25 - 30 lens for the wide open look. I also have a Nikon flash with a remote to help in lighting up difficult situations.Feedback
The biggest thing that I can suggest is patients. Butterfly are frightened very easily so I have found it easier to sit back and watch where they like to land then slowly but surely make your way to where you want to take the photo from. Be adaptive. make sure you have taken a couple of shot previously to ensure you have the lighting correct. I use a remote with live view so you can keep at a distance. Sometimes it works.
