Location
I took this photo in our local woods, "mildenhall woods" its a small forest area on the outskirts of town, next to a US Airforce base in England. Mildenhall woods is my favorite place to take pictures, there are forest paths, open heath land and dense undergrowth all in a relatively small area. It has the added bonus of being walking distance from my house.Time
I took this photo in September, it was still fairly warm, but as the evening approached there was a chill to the air. When the sun is shining (which does happen in England sometimes) I try to shoot at least an hour and a half before sunset, which normally gives me enough time to get the desired amount of photographs.Lighting
For this photograph I exposed for the girls skin, so the background of dense forest became dark, and they popped out bringing the attention of the viewer directly to them.Equipment
I use have a canon 70d and a only a couple of lenses. I am lucky enough to own a 70-200L (original version) The Girls were quite close to the trees behind them, so I stepped back and used my lens at 200mm so I could attempt to compress the background as much as possible.Inspiration
These two girls are twins, I wanted to capture the bond between them. I asked them to whisper stories to each other, quiet giggles flowed whist they shared a secret moment between them.Editing
I did love this photo in color, but with the dark background I felt a dramatic black and white could work. I rarely do edit in black and white, but this image just worked so well (I thought) I darkened the background with a little vignette and it helped the girls pop up some more.In my camera bag
I only own three lenses and my camera. 70d, 17-40L, a sigma 30mm and a 70-200L I do have a couple of cheapo external flashes, for that "just incase" moment if I need extra light.Feedback
When photographing siblings I always try and get some kind of connection between them, asking them to whisper secrets to each other is always a good way to get the connection that makes for a good photo.
