New Orleans reveres the dead. The passing of loved ones is honored in spirited 'homegoing' celebrations to burial in elaborate above-ground tombs (mainly because the city is below sea level) to second line processions that erupt from mournful dirges into impetuous dancing in the streets. El Dia de los Muertos builds on this tradition.

El Día de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday of Day of the Dead, an indigenous celebration infused with the Catholicism of Spanish conquistadors, has spread its way north from Mexico and taken up residence in New Orleans where people traditionally visit the graves of their deceased ancestors on All Saints Day.
