Jake Bright performs freestyle at the Daytona Beach Freeride
UPDATE 2 BTL: The most interesting thing about this particular image is that it was all by luck, right place, right gear available, and right angle. I was in the area to rest up for an upcoming sporting event down the road, fortunately my weekend of downtime turned into a profitable cover shot weekend. You know the saying, best camera is the one you have with you, well i've also live by the AMEX saying "Never leave home without it", that is how I feel about my DSLR, and that mindset has paid off over the years.

I saw a similiar vision here at JAWS Peahi Maui, when shooting big wave challenge, one of the jetski guys went flying 15 feet in the air but was too close to cliff to get a shot of it

I'll first leave you with some words on how this opportunity presented itself, I'll have, to be honest, I was NOT in Daytona to attend this event originally. This image was captured on the Daytona Beach shore during the 2017 Hydro-Turf & Hot Products Daytona Freeride Event. My original assignment was to capture the gridiron action of a National Championship game, I arrived a couple of days early to rest up and enjoy the sand & the sun a bit. The Ocean Breeze Club played host to both events as luck had it. With me being me, I saw an opportunity to do what it is that I love to do, which is capture the moment, in other words, tell the story.Time
January 13th, 2017 at 3:43 pm which set up the sun low in the sky and over my right shoulder (behind me).Lighting
No external lighting used.Equipment
I stood ankle deep in the surf with my 1D-X mounted to my 400mm f/2.8L lens (with 1.4x III extender) atop my monopole. This image particulars ISO: 200 F/4.0 1/6400 sec @560mmInspiration
I've had a great appreciation for good action images, it stems from my early years of involvement in sports (Sports Illustrated is to blame). I'm constantly seeking my next best action image, it's my drive to succeed and my drive to get it right in camera. I set out that morning to rest up for the action to come at the following day's event, I ended up with a realm of information, images, some new experiences, and new industry connections. Not bad for a practice session.Editing
A typical editing session workflow consists of the use of Photo Mechanic used to ingest, caption, crop & rate images. Afterward, I'll import the select images into lightroom to catalog the images into the database, I'll typically apply minor adjustments to the images (such as lens correction & removal of aberrations). In the case of this image I went one step further, I exported the image out to PhotoShop as Smart Object and used NikSoftware to apply ProContrast to the image @25%.In my camera bag
This particular bag carries two Canon 1D-X bodies, a Canon 600ex-rt speedlite, the following lenses: Canon 400mm f/2.8L, 70-200mm f/2.8L, 24-70mm f/2.8L, 16-35mm f/2.8L and 14mm f/2.8 lenses, both the EF 1.4x & 2.0x (versions III). Various other items close out the contents of my bag.Feedback
When asked, I typically suggest that one learn to watch the action first, ensure you have a complete understanding of the action, look for the athletes that are standouts in the sport, learn to anticipate the action. After that, focus on those athletes, block out the distractions, really concentrate on following the action, learn to visualize the final image, once you visual the final image, go ahead a fire off a short frame burst (3 frames), learn to not spray and pray (holding down the shutter button until the buffer fills) for an image. Upon first arriving on the beach this particular day I stood and watched the action for about 30 minutes, I had not covered this particular sport prior to arriving, after my initial 30 minute observation period I approached one of the athletes that I considered a standout, wait for it, as luck turned out the person I introduce myself to, in hopes to gather my information on the action was the reigning 2016 Champion, Mark Gomez. Mark & I talked for a few minutes all the time I was collecting his contact information in hopes of possibly making a new industry sports connection (networking). Walking away with my necessary background info on the event and assisting in the creation of my image captioning to come. I finally started to capture the action. NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THE GEAR ! One never knows when opportunity will come knocking !
