Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the lowcountry near Beaufort, SC.

Time

This photo was captured at sunset.

Lighting

I was looking to capture the light with water reflections and some interesting silhouetted foreground objects.

Equipment

I used my new Nikon D500 camera with a 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, sitting on a Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

I was looking for a good location to capture sunset with my new camera. I had set up my tripod at another location hoping for a dramatic sky sunset. As it became obvious the sunset would not be as dramatic, I knew I wanted to find a better framing of the light, with water reflections and silhouetted foreground objects. I was driving and this small island and trees caught my eye. After making a quick u-turn and setting up my tripod, I was able to capture several images at this location.

Editing

I usually shoot at -0.7 EV to keep from blowing out the highlights. I imported this image into Lightroom and made several adjustments to the color luminance, lightening the shadows, and darkening the highlights.

In my camera bag

I have a Peak Design camera bag in which I carry a Nikon D500 body with a 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 lens and a 12-24mm f/4.0 lens. I have a normal Manfrotto tripod and a Manfrotto BeFree Carbon Fiber tripod for traveling.

Feedback

There are many locations in the lowcountry where water and trees come together for beautiful images. Sunsets can be unpredictable, so when I have time, I like to scope out locations depending upon how the sunset turns out. On this trip I was more rushed and was fortunate to capture this image once the sunset became less dramatic.
