Behind The Lens

Location

New Zealand

Time

I don't remember...

Lighting

Natural light. It was a cloudy day, the light was soft and warm.

Equipment

Canon EOS5 (analogic), 70-200 mm f/2.8

Inspiration

I've seen this face tattoed person and found it interesting. There are lots of Maoris that have face tattoes, but this one wasn't a typical tattoo. I found it very interesting and so I've asked him for some pictures and I think I've tooked a little of his personality, of how he would like to be seen from other people, the first impression.

Editing

This is a scanned image from b&w negative. So post processing is limited to contrast adjust and noise reduction.

In my camera bag

Now it's Canon EOS 5 D Mark III, 70-200mm f/2.8, 50mm 1.4, 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6, 16-35mm 2.8, Manfrotto tripod, b&w polarising filter

Feedback

When you see an interesting person, sometimes it's enough just to ask for a picture. Give some simple tips, like "do not laugh", "look into the lens" or "the chin up/down", ... in order to realize the a similar picture that you've in mind without loosing the personality of the person you're taking the portrait.
