Behind The Lens

Location

I visited the second time the amazing Monument Valley in 2009. I decided to spend here more time, go around by car, and try to find the best possible viewspots. And finally, I found it, this was the perfect view, two giant rocks in the foreground, and the three largest mesa rocks in the background with the perfect clouds, and a rare desert rain which just started on the right. I was lucky enough to find a higher place to take the photo.

Time

It was an autumn day, around 9 am in the morning, October 20, 2009. The morning started with a desert rain, which is pretty rare there, then perfect clouds came.

Lighting

I really love it when there are quickly flying clouds, ready to rain any time, but the strong sunlight can give a huge contrast to the dark clouds in the background. The orange sand and rocks with the blue can make a nice color balance.

Equipment

It was made with a Canon PowerShot SX20 IS. f/3.2 1/1250s ISO 160 5mm, pattern metering mode

Inspiration

I felt in love with Monument Valley, the western movie's most popular background when I was 10 years old, so it was a long time dream to visit the place and take similar photos. When I was there I took more than 2 thousand amazing pictures, it was really hard tough to find "the one" from those.

Editing

Yes, just a little extra saturation and contrast and clarity in Lightroom Classic.

In my camera bag

Nowadays, I'm using a Sony Alpha 7 II base with the two perfect lenses for travel photography: FE 12-24mm F4 G + FE 24-105 F4 G OSS. I'm using peak design's belt holder, so I can quickly switch between my lenses.

Feedback

First of all, you have to travel a lot (which might be difficult in these covid19 days...). It also needs a lot of practicing to find the best spots, best lighting conditions, angles, composition. You have to take as many photos as you can, and then spend several hours to find the best pictures, and work hours to get the maximum from them in post-production.
