Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Kings Park, Perth. I'd spent three weeks photographing wildflowers around South-West WA, finishing up in Perth. A fabulous trip!

Time

Arrived in the middle of a downpour !! We took shelter and when it eased, spent about half an hour taking photos of the wildflowers in the September Wildflower display in Kings Park - a must see if you are ever in that neck of the woods in Australia. This was taken on 23 September around 2:30pm and the light was very soft - great for photos.

Lighting

All natural light and no flash - so pleased with the outcome !

Equipment

This was shot with an Olympus E-M10 Mark II with an ED 40-150mm lens, f4.0, ISO 200, 108mm, -1ev, f5.1, 1/640. No flash. No tripod .... my first foray with a mirrorless camera for travelling and so impressed!

Inspiration

I was inspired to take this photo as the bird was flitting around (playing hard to get) and I thought - "I want a good shot of this bird" - and this was the result !

Editing

With the good, natural light there was minimal post-processing. I did some minor cropping and sharpening with minor vignetting to draw the viewer's eye into the image followed by about a 10% increase in brightness to highlight the feathers and colours.

In my camera bag

For this trip to WA, I wanted to 'travel light' so I carried this Olympus EM10-Mark II with 40-150mm and 14-42mm 'pancake' lenses. My usual Canon 450D, 18-200mm and 60mm macro lenses and associated filters and speedlite flash were not taken on this trip. A gamble that paid off as I had not used the Olympus for such photography.

Feedback

To catch something similar - be patient. Experiment with different settings. Try different angles. Never give up!
