Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the roof of the old Hard Rock Hotel in Chicago. To get up there you had to be invited by one of the managers through Instagram or via email. This was my first visit up there and one of the most memorable ones.

Time

This was taken just after sunset had finished.

Lighting

This was a tricky shot that I didn't think would turn out as cool as it did. The sunset was blocked out by a storm and by the time night came, the sky was filled with rain. I not only thought I was going to ruin my camera with rain but also thought that any photo I took would have some blur or distortion from all the rain. It wasn't until I started editing this photo that I realized how cool it turned out.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D750, Tamron 15-30 2.8, and a Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

Just living in the moment and taking advantage of every opportunity that comes to me. earlier that day I had no idea I would be up on the roof of this building in the middle of a rainstorm, but I met the right people and was lucky enough that they had an extra opening on the tour that would go up for sunset.

Editing

Of course! I love Photoshop. I first ran it through Lightroom to adjust the overall color and lighting. After exporting into Photoshop, I fine-tuned the contrast, colors, vignettes, and finished with sharpening and spot removal.

In my camera bag

I always have my D750, Tamron 15-30 2.8, Tamron 70-200 2.8, Nikkor 50mm 1.8G, and Mavic Pro.

Feedback

You can no longer get on this rooftop unfortunately but there are many others in Chicago that have a similar view. My advice would be to never lose hope on the photos you're taking regardless of how you think they'll turn out. I thought this photo would be ruined by the large amount of rain that was present. In the end, everything turned out much better than I expected.
