At first glance it might look like this Common Sandpiper is walking on a muddy shore or a fallen tree. Upon closer inspection you notice hairs sticking up and realize it isn't on the ground at all. In fact, this Sandpiper is foraging on the back of a Hippopotamus. Hippos spend much of their time in the water and can remain very still for long periods of time. During our visit to Tanzania we frequently saw shorebirds and other water birds using them as stepping stones and shorelines in their hunt for food. Western Serengeti. September 2016
