The cold desert of Ladakh, beyond the great Himalaya, in northwestern India has hidden gems like these sand dunes in Nubra. To get there, one needs to drive over the highest motorable mountain pass in the world - the Khardung La. On descending the pass, the wide valley created by the Nubra and Shyok rivers reveals itself. It is like an oasis with sand dunes and trees. The Nubra valley looks nothing like the cold, dry country of Ladakh is known for. It is green and rich.
The winds pick up in the afternoon and create a dream-like atmosphere with the blowing sand. Keeping it out of your body and camera equipment is a challenge. But a challenge worth accepting as the scenes created by the elements are fantastic.
