Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Masa Maira in Kenya, Africa on the last day of our safari.

Time

This photo still gives me goosebumps. I remember it being mid-morning on our last day of our safari, heading back to camp to pack up for home. On the way we saw a pride of lions in the distance. Our driver stopped the Land Rover and waited. After what seemed an eternity the pride started toward us. As they got closer our fear started to rise, until they were upon us. What a chilling way to end the safari. And, get one of my best photos from the trip.

Lighting

The lighting at the Mara is almost always nice. As I was shooting, I was wondering whether the sun would be too harsh on the lions. Luckily the lions and the surrounding grasses came out nice.

Equipment

I shot this photo with the Nikon D800E with a Nikon 8-400mm lens, hand held. It was shot at 1/400 sec, ISO 200, 310mm at f5/6.

Inspiration

There was very little inspiration needed. When the pride started toward me I thought of one thing - shoot!

Editing

I did some standard post-processing, adjusting the color temperature, highlight, shadows, etc. All of this done in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Since I have taken this photo, I have purchased a Nikon D850. It is now in my bag with the D800E as my backup. I always carry the Nikon 14-24, Nikon 24-70, and Nikon 80-400. I also take along some filters: polarizer, ND filter including a 10-stop, and a split grad. With me is also my RRS tripod and ball head.

Feedback

For shots as these, you only have a few seconds So, to control your emotions, take deep breaths, try to remain calm, and fire away.
