Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a public park and garden in the city where we live. I am a self taught photographer and am always looking for opportunities to practice the new things I learn and on this day my husband suggested we go check out the flowers.

Time

It was July and so the flowers we knew would be in full bloom and we knew the day would get hot so we went out about mid-morning. The colors were vibrant that day and I knew I could get away with a smaller f stop and could get a fairly quick shutter speed so ended up trying f10 at 1/250 at about 200mm.

Lighting

Since it was mid-morning it was fairly bright but it was a perfectly overcast day so the light was even and perfect for shooting photos of everything from the flowers to my child.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D3300 with my 55-200mm lens, iso 400 and no flash, no filter and no tripod.

Inspiration

I love nature and the challenge of trying to capture the beauty I see around me.

Editing

I didn't do anything but add my name in post processing. I always strive to get my photos as close to perfect in camera as possible since I am not very proficient at editing yet.

In my camera bag

I usually have my 50mm prime lens with me and either my 55-200mm or 18-400mm lens, an extra battery, my new polarizing filter, a cleaning cloth and my remote shutter release.

Feedback

If you want pictures of something specific know when the best time to go is. Like I knew there would be lots of beautiful flowers and butterflies when we went so opportunities should be numerous and take lots and lots of pictures. Know your camera and the lens you are using. Overcast days are awesome since it evens out the light. No matter what don't get discouraged because you will have lots of photos that don't necessarily work out but if you are persistent you will get that one that sings!
