A small blue and rust colour Kingfisher, a little larger than a sparrow in size. Top of head very finely barred with black and blue. A ferruginous ear stripe ending in a white patch on the side of neck and a low, blue cheek stripe. Lores and bill black, chin and throat white, legs coral-red, underparts bright rust. Found singly or in pairs perched on a stake or rock adjoining water. Has a habitat of bobbing its head up and down when perched. Flies low over water when disturbed. A shrill, not unpleasant, CHICHIChee call uttered when darting over water.
