Up close and personal. A close up that shows a lot of emotion . The portrait could be more awesome if there was more looking space.

Behind The Lens

Location
This shot was taken in my home studio in Tucson, AZ. I went to school for photography to learn basic studio lighting. I had attempted a similar shot with a basketball player but realized my lighting mistakes and adjusted.
Time
It was shot at night, but it was in the studio so I was able to control light.
Lighting
My goal is to create drastic lighting to showcase the “badass female athlete”. I put my main strobe to camera right to light up one side of her face. The second light is camera left just out of the shot to create a rim light and a slight light flare.
Equipment
I shot with a canon 5d mark iii with a 24-70 canon lens. My main strobe is an eistien 640 with a medium soft box(my workhorse). The second strobe is a cheap cowboy strobe.
Inspiration
My family is made of all females. Their soapbox, especially my wife’s, is equality in female sports. I took that thought and decided I wanted to capture what a true female looks like. No glamour, just raw. #equality
Editing
My post processing for this image was simple. Bump up contrast, bump up clarity in a big way. Adjust highlights and shadows. Heal tool a few grasses and water drops off her face. Brighten the eyes with dodging and vibrance.
In my camera bag
I have a pelican case that holds all my essentials. AA batteries, 2 extra canon batteries, 2 extra memory cards at 64gb, either my 24-70 or my 70-200 lens(depending what is on my camera at the moment). It also holds my Einstein 640 with a Paul C Buff battery pack. Finally i have in my case some pocket wizards and 5 in 1 reflector. It is a lot, but better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Feedback
When working in the studio with a strobe do not go above 1/160 of a second. You only need high speed sync if you are capturing motion. Don’t be afraid to get the model dirty and spray water on their face. I found that dabbing them with a little olive oil helps bead the water nicely. Finally, I found that
