Ptuj (Poetovio Latin, German PETTAU) is a city and the center of the municipality of Ptuj. It is one of the oldest towns in Slovenia. The area of the city was already inhabited in the late Stone Age in ancient times was a military camp developed Roman fort Poetovio. The medieval town is leaning against the foot of the castle hill. Past Ptuj took place historically important crossing of the Drava River, where a trade route between the Baltic and the Adriatic Sea called Amber Road.
