Gable house in the lower Yakima Valley with the moon out. Got a good moon halo along with the moon creating sparkles in the icy snow. Didn't have to light paint at all for this shot thanks to the moon. It was -5 when I was out there. I had on my heated sweatshirt from makita, 2 paris of pants, heated things in my shoes, 2 pairs of gloves, pretty much 2 pairs of everything.

I like your frames. Is an astronomical image, Orion constellation is one of my favorites in the sky, and Sirius Star is the best! Congrats!

Behind The Lens

Location

This is the Gable house located outside of Toppenish, Washington. It has a ton of history and has many names. Some people call it the stage coach house. There is a mural in the city of Toppenish about the house, but the story listed on it, is not completely accurate on the original owners. I was introduced to this location by the family who's great grandparents once lived in it.

Time

This was taken around 11pm to midnight if I recall. It was a whopping 6 degrees out.. Bbbbrrrrr very very cold. I was wearing 2 pairs of socks, heated insoles in my boots, 3 sweatshirts one which was also battery heated ( a lovely gift from my husband ), gloves and hats.

Lighting

No man made lighting was needed this night. The fog was rolling in and the moon was out. The moon light provided a shimmering sparkle on the icy snow cause the extreme cold and then the fog added a wonderful moon halo to the scene.

Equipment

I shot with my Nikon D600 with my Rokinon 14mm: Settings - ISO 3200 f4.0 for 20 seconds. I also used my tripod.

Inspiration

I came specifically to get Orion over the Gable House, and the moon halo and fog were perfect when I got there adding to the shot. The temperature was so cold, but helped a ton with the ice crystals sparkling in the moon light.

Editing

Not much was done with this photo post process, except to bring down highlights a bit from the moon and remove my truck with clone stamp that was off in the way distance.

In my camera bag

Oh my I have a lot of gear in my bag. You just never know what you will come across and want to photography. The main items are: Nikon D600, Nikon 50mm, Tamron 150-600mm, Rokinon 14mm, Tokina 11-16mm, Minolta 58mm with nikon adapter (completely manual), head lamps for light painting, extra batteries for my camera, wireless intervalometer remote, step up adapter rings for filters, ND Grad Filters square, 10 ND filter, polarizer filters, lens cleaning clothes (Lots), 90 degree eyepiece attachment, Vixen Polarie Star Tracker and mount.

Feedback

Tripod!!! Tripod is the #1 thing you need for getting the stars. After that I would recommend a remote or use the timer on your camera. Learn how to use your camera in manual mode. Get comfortable changing your ISO and F stop (aperture) settings. A typical shot like this have settings of: ISO 3200, f 1.8 for 30 seconds. But it is all dependent on the lens you are using. The wider the f stop on your lens the better but not necessary at all to get star shots. And last, but sometimes first, HAVE FUN! Enjoy your shots.
