Location
This photo was taken on pack ice in the Antarctica, very near to a Emperor Penguin rookery that could only be reached by helicopter and then a 5 km hike on the ice. I spotted this lone Emperor and chick a bit away from the rest of the rookery.Time
It was about 2 PM Antarctica time (whatever that is).Lighting
This was just natural light and was not modified at all.Equipment
I used a Nikkon D5500 with a 55-300 mm lens which is what I happened to have on my camera at that time. I had been planning to switch out to longer zoom but hadn't got around to it, yet.Inspiration
I was enchanted by the wonderful shapes of the ice and when I saw these two with that weird and wonderful background, I was struck by the loneliness and stark grandeur I saw through my lens.Editing

I usually have a Nikon D5100 or D5500 and a couple of lenses, a lot of lens wipes, a lot of batteries, a few SD cards, and, since I work at an animal shelter, taking dog pictures for the web site, I always seem to find a squeaker (to get dogs' attention), the occasional dog treat, and other strange things that get thrown in there and eventually get cleaned out.Feedback
Find a place that speaks to you. Find a passion for wildlife.. Train yourself to see the world in terms of shapes and colors. And get incredibly lucky. For the 4,000 pictures you take on a trip, you might find 5 or 6 that sing to you.
