Congratulations, kevinkrippner, I chose your picture as the Challenge Champion in the "Leaves" challenge that I hosted. Some may think that there were many other pictures more striking than this one, but I would like to explain what I see in it to make it my top favorite among 3,935 entries. First of all, in terms of technique, I don't see anything missing. Right sharpness (not over nor under sharpened). Perfect composition and positioning of the subject following the rule of thirds (which generally turns the image more appealing). Beautiful subject (the beautifully colored leaf). Second, the subject is absolutely "Leaves". Beautiful colorful leaf as the main subject and lots of leaves forming the whole background. Last, and definitely not least, the most important reason for me to choose this image: its strong emotional impact (at least for me). I see it as a concept, a metaphor, or whatever name you want to call it. I see it as a great alternative version of "Phoenix reborn from ashes". Yes, I guess those are not ashes, but mold. Still, the dryness, the grays, and beiges, and whites, all invoke on me the image of ashes. And there, on top of all that lifeless background, the Phoenix, beautiful, with fierce colors, shouting "I am alive".
