Location
This barn is located in southern Champaign County Ohio, near Mechanicsburg on OH 187 near OH 29. I was driving through heavy ground fog and pulled over when I saw this red roofed barn with the large hay bails.Time
I was on my way to pick someone up from their 3rd shift job before dawn although a tinge of orange was already in the sky. This photograph was taken at 7:36 AM, October 4, 2016.Lighting
This was natural light, the lens was protected by a UV filter.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D3300, lens was a Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 SP Di VC USD XLD, and the camera was hand held. This was one of the first photographs I'd taken with this lens.Inspiration
The ground fog and the pre-dawn light seemed magical, combined with the green of the grass and the white barn with the red roof and the hay bails caught my eye. I pulled over and rather quickly took this photograph.Editing
As I am a beginner to the post-processing world, my editing was simple. The color saturation was boosted as was the contrast to "cut through" some of the fog. There was a minor crop done. That was it. I'm learning, slowly, how to do a bit more editing. In my camera bag
I purchased the Nikon as a kit, with 2 lenses, 18-50mm and 50-200mm. I've added 2 Tamron lenses, 70-300mm and 90mm macro. I have a dedicated Sunpack speedlight, filters, sunshades, charger, spare battery, lens pen, blower brush, USB cable, IR shutter release, and WIFI adapter. These all fit into a Ruggard backpack. There are ties to strap a compact tripod, but that was not with me that day. I really like how much equipment I can pack with me.Feedback
In my area, in the spring and fall, ground fog is pretty common. Scoping out locations beforehand is always best, but in this case the conditions were wonderful and the subject was chosen spontaneously. Leave well before dawn or well before sunset and set up before the light is either too much or too little. Avoid the program modes on your camera and shoot with the lowest ISO setting, slowest shutter speed, and smallest aperture that will allow the shot without showing motion blur.
