Location
This photo was taken in the loungeroom of my family home, and is a very personal insight to what's important in my life.Time
It was around 1pm, as the daylight poured through the floor to ceiling windows surrounding the room.Lighting
All natural lighting was used, and the subjects were positioned so that my sister was glowing and my pop was in shadows to create a focal point.Equipment
I used a simple Canon 1100d DSLR with a 18-55mm lens. That was all the equipment I had at this point and learnt to work with environmental conditions (and to hold the camera verrrry steadily).Inspiration
My new baby sister was a few months old and this was my pop holding her for the first time. I wanted to show the magical connection a grandfather has to his grandaughter in this truly beautiful moment.Editing
Though I prefer not to edit my images, for this one I definitely played around in post. I decided that it was most impactful to have the image in black and white and increase the contrast slightly to accommodate. Although there was lots of clutter in the black area at the top of the frame which distracted from the focus, so I actually blacked that out in post and went over the edge areas to feather so it wasn't harsh. I also enhanced the brightness on the baby while decreasing it elsewhere to get that glowing contrast.In my camera bag
These days I still have my 1100d as a backup, using a 7d MK I as my primary. I have 3 lenses I use - 18-55mm, 50mm and 75-300mm - and unfortunately dont have a speedlight yet, but I do prefer to use natural light so that will come in time. Fun fact: I own 12 cameras in total, 10 of which are film. I love darkroom processing when I can because it feels so much more real. You have to be very selective in taking shots for film, whereas on digital you can take hundreds of duds and not be thinking and considering the artistic value.Feedback
You dont need fancy equipment to get amazing shots. Try to study the scene you want to capture, and why you chose this subject. Keep the 'why' floating around your mind and let that guide your artistic vision. And if something isn't quite right, revise and keep trying. In the end it's amazing what you can do in post production these days. Dont give up!
