Behind The Lens

Location

This portrait was taken in the woods near my home in northern Maine.

Time

It was taken in the afternoon during a Snow White portrait session.

Lighting

I wanted to use only natural light, focusing on depth, light and shadow.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon d90, one of my first cameras. I have since upgraded but loved what that camera had allowed me to experience through trial and error.

Inspiration

I am a huge fan of stories and fairy tales, particularly from a child’s perspective. I wanted to capture the innocence and sweetness that can arise when children become a part of a bigger story. It’s magical.

Editing

I brightened and darkened various aspects of the photo in post processing, to create a moreDynamic feel that remained true to the story and vision.

In my camera bag

Most of my necessary items beyond my camera and lenses in my bag have to do with keeping children’s interests: bubbles, small toys, squeakers, funny moustache glasses, candy, etc. I like to keep the kids curios and the atmosphere fun.

Feedback

My best advice is to know yourself and what works best for you in relating to your clients. Are you silly? Serious? How can you keep your clients relaxed and have fun at the same time? Do what makes you happy and the natural glow will come from within for your clients as well.
