Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph was taken on one of my Artist Photographer Guided African salaries whilst visiting a Maasai village in Monduli, Manyara Region, Tanzania.

Time

Taken at 5:43pm

Lighting

I exposed for the on subjects who had enough 'modeling' light to avoid a flat image. The sky was relatively bright and blown out in the image. The quality of the capture made doing some work on it worthwhile.

Equipment

I was using two Canon 7D's on the day one with 24-105 and one with 100-400. This shot was taken with the 100-400 the I use to try to get more candid shots.

Inspiration

There was lots of activity in the village with a range of photographic opportunities. This one stood out because of the joy on Maree's face and her interaction with the children.

Editing

Post processed in Lightroom. Not my usual treatment of an image. Highlights -38 Whites -100 Shadows +7 Clarity +40 Vibrance +13 Sharpening 25 Masking 95 Noise reduction - Luminance 20 Detail 50 Contrast 23

In my camera bag

I am a Wildlife Artist and Photographer I chose the 7D for the extra magnification on the crop sensor. My carry on camera bag for travels weighs 14kg. It contains all my essential Camera gear including laptop, card reader, chargers, hard drives, cables, shoulder stock .... I am now shooting with a Canon 7D and 7D Mark11, 100-400 1:4.5-5.6 L IS 11 USM. & 24-105 1:4. There is marked improvement in image quality from the 7D and the earlier 100-400. The vast majority of my shots are taken with the 100-400.

Feedback

When confronted with a number of photo opportunities don't just snap away and hope, look for something that grabs your attention. An angle, personalities, emotion, light,....
