Location
I took the photo in a wood some miles from home, a place I often visit in Autumn for mushrooms.Time
It was early in the morning, sun was still standing very low and was shining through the leafless trees. The hole forest was covered in hoarfrost, all I needed to find was an interesting subject...Lighting
I just had to find a position using the shining sun in the background, so the light is just natural.Equipment
I had my 105mm on the D7000 and used a plastic bag around the beanbag to put the camera on as protection against the ice, went on my knees and made my shot using the angle viewer. As Always I tried different F's and then decide at home which shot looks best.Inspiration
I liked the contrasting warm colors of the leaf captured in the frost, but most of all, it was the sun behind that did the job. The fun part of macro is that you can take your time to 'explore' your subject, unlike when 'shooting' birds, which is another thing I like to do.Editing
I do the normal processing in ViewNX (sharpening, whitebalance, shadows/highlights,color).Afterwards in CS3 I sometimes use Nik filters to accentuate some effects. Here I just strenghtened the sunlight a bit making better contrast with the cold foreground.In my camera bag
I mostly walk around with my Tamron 150-600 on the cam, the 18-70 and 105 are in my bag. I Always have some filters, my angle viewer and remote control with me(and a plastic bag). I also put in a mini tripod from Veldon, very handy and light !Feedback
When you want to do macro, take your time !!! Walk around slowly and use your eyes. From time to time get down to groundlevel, you'll see things from different perspective, look around very intense and concentrated, you'll find plenty of interesting subjects. Take several shots from different POVs and use several different F's ! And...don't be afraid to get dirty :) !!!
