Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the River Dee at Chester, the pleasure boats can be seen in the foreground and the old Dee Bridge beyond.

Time

As you can see, the sun was setting. It was just before Xmas 2016 and therefore was an early sunset around 4:15 pm.

Lighting

I was stunned by the colours initially and that was the main reason for the shot. Especially as the light cast a great reflection on the water

Equipment

I use a Nikon D7000 and my fast 17-55m f2.8 lens. I did not use flash but set the ISO to 800 in order to capture the colour and get a fast enough shutter speed to take a hand held shot.

Inspiration

I was inspired to take this shot as I noticed the shape of the clouds silhouetted in the sky. I saw a map of Great Britain (well almost) and thought it was worthy of a picture.

Editing

I used Lightroom to increase the colour and saturation for the final picture.

In my camera bag

Being a vey new and novice photographer, I do not have any specialist equipment beyond the camera, tripod and a couple of lens's. I did invest in a fast 17-55 f2.8 Nikon lens as I quickly realised that a good lens was a necessity. The other lens I have is a kit 55-200 lens which I use to capture nature I would love to buy a longer lens but don't have the funds to do so as yet.

Feedback

I don't feel that I am qualified to give advice as I have only recently taken up photography but what I have learned is that equipment is key to obtaining better clarity and sharpness. Understanding the exposure triangle is complex but well worth the effort and enables you to master the use the Aperture and Manual controls. I did sort of understand these principles with this shot as I realised I needed to up the ISO to enable a fast enough shutter speed to hand hold my camera.
