Gondwanaland remnant...Nothofagus gunii above Hanson's Lake. Native deciduous beech, 'the fagus' is a remnant from the super continent Gondwanaland. It is our only native deciduous tree, and only found in the alpine areas of Tasmania.
Global warming threatens all the unique Gondwanaland remnant flora in Tasmania, due to the increase in dry lightning strikes and increasingly dry summers, creating an exponentially increased risk of fire. Unlike much of the Australian bush, these remnants do not regenerate after fire, and the peat soils on which they rely, are killed forever by fire.
