Annapurna I (8091m) is the highest point of Annapurna Massif a 55 km long massif in the Himalayas. It is the 10th-highest summit in the world but has the greatest fatality rate of all the 14 eight-thousanders: as of March 2012, there have been 52 deaths during ascents, 191 successful ascents & 9 deaths upon descent, which means that "for every three thrill-seekers that make it safely up and down Annapurna I, one dies trying.
Annapurna is a Sanskrit name which literally means "full of food" (feminine form), but is normally translated as Goddess of the Harvests. In Hinduism, Annapurna is a goddess of fertility and agriculture and an avatar of Durga.
