Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the hospital where my aunt gave birth to the little Natalie.

Time

This was taken at about 13:00, with quite bright sunlight coming in throught the window. The day was very warm and the sky was clear, so it gave me good conditions to take some shots.

Lighting

Not very sophisticated. I focused on the lighting direction so that the fingers would be nicely lit from above, and have a dark crevice in between. I had just enough room to manuever arround, but limited to the extent of the baby's reach.

Equipment

This was taken with my standard set, which includes the Nikon D7000, Nikkor 18-105 kit, and of course no flash :) No tripod aswell.

Inspiration

This came into mind right out of the blue. I didn't think much of this shot, up untill post processing. I knew the position was good and that the lighting might be fair, but I didn't expect this outcome. Ofcourse, I love newborns, and toddlers, and kids of all ages, so it was natural of me to take this kind of shot. Had she been born as a boy, I would have been the godfather.

Editing

My post processing included mainly the extraction of black in the image and the "old effect" with the increased clearness and contrast. Other than that, just moving a lot of sliders and hoping for the best effect.

In my camera bag

My standard includes the Nikon D7000, 35mm prime F1.8, 18-105mm kit, and a cheap tripod that I never really use. I also prefer a backpack to a bag, mostly beacuse of stability and aditional cargo space.

Feedback

Focus on the frail parts of the child. The eyes, the fingers, the toes, the nose... If you want a similar effect, do the exact opposite of child photography. Make it crude, violent, rough and give it the old effect by amplifying the wrinkles.
