This photo of my girlfriend's best friend, Katie, was taken in our living room, just before Christmas. It was a spur of the moment shot. She was made up to go out to the mall with my girlfriend, so I seized the opportunity to take this photo on her way out.Time
My girlfriend and her two friends were about to go to the mall and wanted a girls' night out. I had nothing better to do than to edit a photo while they were gone, so I decided to grab Katie for this shot. This photo was taken at 11:18 PM on December 6th, 2016. I wound up staying pretty late.Lighting
This photo was lit only by a cellphone in the book and the Christmas lights behind the model. This was originally just a test shot to see how well my 85mm lens would work in low light and how the bokeh of the tree lights would look. I was so pleased with the result, I had to upload it to Viewbug!Equipment
This was shot handheld with my Canon 6D and 85mm 1.8 Lens.Inspiration
I have seen other photos where children were reading books in front of a Christams tree, where an LED or flashlight were used to light up their faces. I was very intrigued by these creative photos, so I thought I'd put my own spin on it and use a cellphone, instead. It worked pretty well!Editing
I opened up the blacks and shadows in Lightroom and added some warmth and vibrance. then, in Photoshop, used surface blur plus high pass filter for the skin. Next, I added a curves adjustment layer to brighten the highlights and deepen the blacks. Also, I added a layer of dodging and burning on 50% grey overlay layer to create dimension. I cloned the tree to make it bigger. Lastly, I created a glow with a surface blur layer and copy of background set to hard light ...I think that's all!In my camera bag
My 24-105mm lens is the first thing I'm always sure I have in my bag. It covers such a great range. I also bring two YN-600 speedlights, my 85mm 1.8 lens, 70-200 2.8 lens, a microfiber cloth, and well, my camera of course. I usually squeeze a couple energy drinks into my bag as well. As a wedding photographer, primarily, I need to be on my toes!Feedback
Experiment, experiment, experiment! If you have a random idea for a photo, don't hesitate to try it out as soon as possible. You'll forget your idea eventually and the world may never see that great idea you had! Half of my shots are "test shots" that actually make it into my portfolio.
