Location
The photo was taken in the park near Staraya town in Leningrad region (Russia), where I lived in that time. I was just walking around with my wife catching beautiful light at those silent winter evening with fluffy snow on the trees and bushes.Time
I don't remember the exact time, but I guess it was around 4 pm, considering latitude (about 10 km far from Saint-Petersburg) and season (the beginning of January).Lighting
At those day, I noticed the wonderful fluffy snow on the trees and ground and decided to go for a walk with my camera a bit before the sunset in order to get to this place at the time of the beautiest light. To my mind, the mentioned time is when the sun is just above the horizon (both at sunrise and sunset), because the light in that moments is low and contrast, so besides of the terrific shades it emphasizes all the textures around.Equipment
This was shot on my current camera Canon 5D Mark II with one of the lenses I still have in my bag - Canon EF 24-105/f4 L IS USMInspiration
Frankly, I am a quite emotional person, especially in everything concerning nature. So, that was just a spontaneous decision: I noticed the beauty behind my window and realized that it would look amazing at sunset. Therefore, the only things that inspired me are the nature and light.Editing
I always do the post-processing to my photos, because I'm firmly convinced: the main task of the nature photographer is to transfer his feelings about the plot to a viewer. Photography is only a flat image, which cannot transfer other very important things like smell, volume, tactile sensations, sounds, wind, humidity and so on. Therefore, the only way to transfer the feelings of the photographer is to make the photo beautiful. Concerning to this exact photo, I added saturation and contrast, and, the main thing, changed a bit the colors of lights and shadows in order to get the opposite shades: warm lights and cold shadows. Besides of that's the nice combination of colors itself, it reinforced the tonal perspective. In my camera bag
When I traveled several years ago, plus to Canon 5D Mark II I used to have EF 24-105/f4 L IS USM. But then, I realized how necessary tools for nature photographer are the tripod and wide angle lens. So, until the end of 2017, I usually took my Slik tripod and rented Canon EF 17-40/f4 L USM lens. Finally, this year I bought Canon EF 16-35/f4 L IS USM and a polarizing filter. And now, I think that's the best minimal set of equipment: full-frame camera, wide angle lens with a polarizing filter, and a tripod.Feedback
The main advice is quite typical for sunset (sunrise) photos: try to find a photogenic place and the best spots and foreshortenings in it before the shooting. Because while photographing you should remember the only thing: the light changes every minute and you have very little time for anything, so you better be prepared. :)
