Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Muonio, in Lapland, Finland.

Time

This was taken in January 2016 on an afternoon when the temperature had finally gotten a bit warmer: the previous day we had -38 C but now "only" about -20 C.

Lighting

Because the temperature was rising suddenly, fog started to cover the sky, creating these very soft golden tones.

Equipment

Even though the conditions were a bit extreme for my drone, I used the Yuneec Typhoon 4k to capture this unique view.

Inspiration

Seeing the whole scenery covered in snow - and especially the trees looking like they've been sugarcoated - you really want to explore all possible angles to capture it. Actually at this time of the year in the North the days are very short, and you could only get the Sun in the shot with a drone.

Editing

For post-processing I used Lightroom to get tones exactly the way I pictured them in my mind when taking the shot.

In my camera bag

My gear varies depending on the time of day. For daytime shots I usually carry my drone when possible together with my Canon 6D (or nowadays 5DM4) and a 24-105 f/4L lens.

Feedback

You never really know for sure when the perfect moment finds you... so you better be prepared and carry your equipment with you whenever possible :)
