The Glen Natural Area is the main attraction in Ricketts Glen Stat Park in Pennsylvania. The Falls Trail has 18 of the 22 named waterfalls in the area in a 3.5 mile loop. Thousands of people from all over the area, and beyond, visit the park in autumn to witness the leaves changing color.
I made a trip to the park over a weekend in October to photograph the waterfalls with the fall foliage around them. I reached the park on a blustery evening. The wind was blowing hard and I could see the leaves falling off the trees. It rained overnight. When I entered the park before dawn the next morning, the mood was dark and ominous with a layer of fog over the forest. As the sun burnt through the fog at dawn, the atmosphere changed to bright and cheerful. The warm sunlight lit up the colorful leaves and set up the mood for this shot. A spot under Oneida Falls produced an intimate view of the falls and the sun slowly illuminating the canyon. The fallen leaves made the foreground interesting, while the swollen waterfall, from the rain overnight, made the scene dynamic.
