Behind The Lens

Location

In front of the house there is one of our big linden trees, and the whole story was unfolding in its branches, against uniform, clear sky background.

Time

18-Nov-16 @ 15:44:40 was when the photos were shot, more or less within the same minute, since Exif got lost in the process. Main thing is, there was this one leaf there... and the whole story is about it. :)

Lighting

No exact data is available now, but since it was a beautiful day, I think that the camera was on Auto, and has chosen well!

Equipment

The camera used was a Nikon P610, my old superzoom of that time. All photos were shot out of hand, and no add-on gear was present. In all, it was simple shooting from the balcony, and I may have leaned on the railing for all four shots. No big deal.

Inspiration

Well, the magpies are always interesting, since these clever and these birds usually do whatever they do in a playful way. I'm glad I shot the first shot, as it opened the chance to also include the leaf. This, then slowly revealed the idea about the rest.

Editing

I've had, of course, to pick the four photos for the collage, and those had to have about the same background hue on average, because the camera was modifying the tone with every shot (depending upon the percentage of certain sky area in the frame). The final touch was created by removing the leaf in the fourth shot, where the magpie looks down. With the story now ready, it only took another five minutes to resize the four shots and arrange them to follow the imagined storyline. And then I uploaded the image and spent another few minutes making the "conversation" in the descript. Easy! :)

In my camera bag

For decades already I find it easier to carry a photo vest than any photo bag. It is more than enough to take along whatever I want or need for my photo session, walk or trip. My photo bags usually stay home or in the car, to keep the equipment I'm not using at the moment. The tripod has its permanent place in the car. My vest pockets usually contain two cameras. Regardless of which is the "main" camera, one of those is always some waterproof model, if the weather plays up or when I find something interesting in the shallows. Nowadays I usually use Nikon P900 or Sony RX100m7, and the waterproof backup is either Olympus TG-2 or a Paralenz DiveCam. Other vest pockets keep the spare batteries, ND and CPL filters, and one small camera clamp which can be fixed to almost anything. In many cases this can replace a tripod. The vest has deep pockets for longer lenses, and these usually hold a small water bottle, a sandwich, or a bar of chocolate - if I plan on being out for the whole day. I always pack about three meters length of paracord or similar strong, thin rope, one hefty pocket knife, and a lighter. Much can be improvised with these if need be. Recently I made it even easier, and take the essentials along in a waist pouch; one variable-volume McKinley. In the Outdoors, simplicity and comfort are my most important requirements!

Feedback

Shoot a lot, and later choose what you plan on posting up! The best shots should be kept, the botches are best deleted right away, as there is rarely something more boring than seeing the whole series posted to someone's page. Be merciless, save your backup space, keep your gallery interesting to browse through, and remember that variety is an important part of a really interesting gallery. Above all, keep your gallery decent! Viewbug is a FAMILY SITE, and not all the shots are right for all eyes. There are much more themes than... and if this is your main theme, well, keep in mind that some of the private shots are best kept private, right? Enjoy! :)
