Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my lounge room at home. Because the kids are still at home I don't have a dedicated spot for a studio so I make do wherever it works.

Time

It was taken in the evening, but because it was indoors and the low key style of the photo, the time of day didn't really have much impact on the photo at all.

Lighting

I was going for a redemption sort of look with the light coming down from overhead and my model looking up towards it. At the time I only had one flash available to work with so unfortunately couldn't add a rim light.

Equipment

This is a photo from a few years back now and I think at the time I was shooting with a Nikon D7100 and using a single Nikon SB-600 speedlight.

Inspiration

Despite being an introvert, I've always loved portraits, especially moody black and white portraits so there wasn't much inspiration other than trying to practice that style of photography.

Editing

Yes, basic adjustments, cropping and so on and some skin smoothing which I was extremely new to doing at the time.

In my camera bag

These days I normally have a Nikon D750 with a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, a 50mm f1.8 prime lens and a 28-80mm lens. A pair of Nikon SB-600 speedlights, plus a pair of manual generic speedlights. Spare batteries, CPL, ND and other filters. Tripod.

Feedback

Use a family member or friend as a model if you need. Adjust your camera settings so that all the ambient light in the location is gone. Taking a shot without flash should give you a fully black frame. Add lights as required and set the lights how you want for the effect you want. Don't forget to give your model feedback and tell them they are doing a great job.
