Well captured together. Look like F-18s.

Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken on the coast of Washington state near Seattle. The planes were part of a training session of the US Navy.

Time

This was taken in late morning when the sun was behind me.

Lighting

The best way to capture a fast moving object is with strong natural lighting from behind. This provides the best illumination of the subject, a better depth of field and an ease tracking the fast moving subject.

Equipment

A Canon 70D camera equipped with an L-Series 400 mm zoom lens. It was handheld, but the bright light facilitated tracking and focusing on the subject.

Inspiration

While I prefer nature photography, I also like taking photos of various aircraft. In many ways, the equipment and skills are the same in that a long zomm on a fast moving subject is required.

Editing

Minor sharpening, otherwise no post-processing.

In my camera bag

The same equipment as above, plus a doubler, a smaller zoom lens and a mini tripod.

Feedback

Either plan in advance if it is an airshow and select the most appropriate viewing location. If is is impromptu like this was, use the maximum flexibility for the timing of the shot. In this case, being a training run, the planes covered a quarter of the sky so I could select the optimal section for optimal front-lighting.
