Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made in Glencoe. A sunset at Buachaille Etive Mòr, a mountain in the Highlands of Scotland. This mountain is almost entirely surrounded by the river Etive.

Time

This was a well-known place and had two days to wait for the best light, then he would go to other spot's. But there was no need to wait. The first day promised clouds and sunshine But there was no need to wait. The first day promised clouds and sunshine. It was only necessary to wait for the best light and the sunset was perfect.

Lighting

As the photograph is made against light, the detail of the mountain was compromised as the sun sets behind the mountain. As such my choice was make a bracketing of 3 exposures (5, 10 and 20 seconds) with a difference of 1 stop. I used also a polarizing filter.

Equipment

NIKON D750 Lens - 16.0-35.0 mm f/4.0 Configuration - 16mm | ƒ/8 | ISO 100

Inspiration

This is a well known spot in Scotland. I was hoping to get a different record from the ones I saw on the net. I chose a portrait orientation because the elements would gain dimension (tree and mountain) without losing the clouds.

Editing

The editing was done in Photoshop using only 2 of the 3 registers and applying luminosity masks. In fact, only interested to get the details of the mountain in the record overexposed.

In my camera bag

As a landscape photographer I use the objective 16-35 in practically 90% of the records. The Nikon 16.0-35.0 mm f/4.0 guarantees outstanding sharpness and almost no distortion. I also have a 50mm and a 70-200. As a support camera I have an old Canon 550D that always accompanies me. ND an GND Formatt-Hitech filters and a Hoya polarizer.

Feedback

Wait for the best light, go back several times to the same place and be aware of all the elements. In this photo I had the luck of the movement of the clouds in my direction that turns out fantastic in long expositions. I usually pay close attention to clouds. We should always study the place well, to know where the sun will be relative to our position (I use tools for the mobile phone). The framing should allow us to remove from our picture unwanted and distracting elements.
