Behind The Lens

Location

UK Dartmoor

Time

midday or just before

Lighting

It was a dull day - Autumn lighting with diffuse light and low contrast

Equipment

Canon 5d, 24-105mm zoom, hand held. No polarising filter - see notes below about sky detail.

Inspiration

It had rained overnight, and I was looking for pools of surface water with interesting reflections - found nothing. Came across this tree which was just about alive, and liked the textures of the tree. From one direction there was a pool of standing water, but nothing really worked because I had to be close to get reflections but the reflections of the tree were uninteresting and contrast was minimal because of back lighting/shadows. From the other direction I found this picture which optimised what highlights and dynamic range were available in the diffuse light.

Editing

Processed in general to obtain maximum dynamic range. Sky processed in a separate layer to maximise contrast available and to retrieve the maximum detail. colours of land and tree manipulated to de-saturate green and relatively enhance colour of the bracken to enhance feeling of dryness.

In my camera bag

Canon 5d, 24-105 zoom, 100-400 zoom, tripod & remote release, 2x teleconverter. filters including nd grads and polarising, spare battery & card, cleaning equipment - flash & other equipment depending on expected subject matter.

Feedback

don't forget to pack the polarising filter - I did on this occasion making sky detail more difficult to recover. As this was a chance encounter light conditions and weather were unplanned - now it is autumn again I am minded to visit location again, but will plan ahead and try and find more interesting light conditions - watch this space.
