Behind The Lens

Location
This phot was taken at Blendon Woods Metropark in Columbus, Ohio. Blendon Woods is a large beautiful park with miles of trails. The pasrk features lots of male and beech trees so it is on fire witch color in the fall. The park is known for it's population of birds, I often spot Pileated Woodpeckers, wild turkeys, and warblers in the migration seasons. This photo was taken in late fall.
Time
This photo was taken in the afternoon in late fall.
Lighting
You've got to have your camera ready to use available lighting, and it's often dark in the forest, so the faster the lens the better.
Equipment
I used a Pentax K-50 with smc PENTAX-DA* 300mm F4, 1/400, f4.0, ISO 640.
Inspiration
I was hiking the the woods with a couple of cameras, one with a 300mm lens since there are a lot of birds in this woods. I just happened to look over and saw the chipmunk scurrying around in the leaves. I got ready and waited, the chipmunk popped up behind the stump and looked straight at me, of course he had that massive (to a chipmunk) acorn in his mouth and I knew this was a special pose. I managed to get three shots before he took off, this was the second shot.
Editing
This photo was cropped a lot. otherwise not too much post processing was done to it.
In my camera bag
If I'm shooting nature I'm usually carrying a Pentax K-50 or K-30, Pentax HD DA 15/4, Pentax DA*300/4, Sigma 17-50/2.8, and maybe one or two other lenses. I also shoot Sony and may have the a6000 with the Sony 30/3.5 macro and Sony 20/2.8.
Feedback
When walking in nature areas I nearly always mount a long lens on my camera, because that's usually what is needed for wildlife or birds, and they can disappear very quickly. Landscapes and plants will wait while you change lenses. Always be as quiet as you can, and listen because you'll often hear small wildlife before you see it.
