Behind The Lens

Location
This 2010 photo was taken high on a remote part of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, in what used to be the Tibetan province of Amdo, during the Dajiutang horse festival.
Time
This was a mid-day shot on a gray, cloudy day. I was one of less than a dozen westerners at the festival, which featured young teen boys in a 7 km horse race across the grasslands. As the Tibetans started to migrate towards the finish line of the race, this rider stormed past me at full gallop.
Lighting
Lighting was all natural for this shot.
Equipment
This photo was taken with a Canon Rebel T1i featuring a stock 55-250mm zoom lens (shot at 100mm).
Inspiration
I was one of maybe 8 westerners at this festival, which drew in Tibetan nomads from across the region. The festival was a mix of racing and Buddhist ceremonies, and the high altitude (4500m) grasslands, Tibetans in traditional costumes, and overall festivities made for a great photo day. I had whirled around as this rider went past and got this single shot.
Editing
I use both Lightroom and Nik Collection for post-processing. The main thing I did with this one was to increase tonal contrast.
In my camera bag
In 2010 I was shooting with a generic Rebel T1i. Over the intervening years I've upgraded and now use Canon 1DX ii (all purpose) and 5DS (for landscapes) bodies and a selection of Canon and Zeiss lenses.
Feedback
This was an impromptu day (which often seem to be the best kind) as I only found out about this festival the day before while at the Labrang monastery. I was on a 6-week Beijing to Kathmandu overland trip, so was not under pressure to shoot at any particular event or site. Sometimes that lack of pressure allows one to settle in, enjoy the day, and take advantage of some lucky circumstances. The Tibetans have a word - tendrel - which in its colloquial sense means an auspicious coincidence: this was a tendrel kind of day.
