Behind The Lens

Location
This beauty was shot in our home garden. I have a section just for dahlias!
Time
Early morning, between 6:30 - 7AM.....
Lighting
Early morning/early afternoon are my favorite times to shoot flowers--the light has enough strength to get excellent definition without a lot of spots that aren't always easy to correct in post production.
Equipment
My current camera is a Canon PowerShot SX30 iS. Handheld, no tripod or flash. I like the flip out LED window that lets me frame my shots better than I would by looking through the small window on the top.
Inspiration
Dahlias have been an enduring favorite of mine since the time I discovered their special beauty, and I love the color of this one! When they're blooming, I'm usually outside, at different times of the day, shooting them.
Editing
This one didn't need much in the way of post production; I cropped it, applied a little focal zoom on the outer petals, and darkened the shot slightly.
In my camera bag
Since I don't have any other lenses [the PowerShot I have doesn't allow for changing lenses] it's usually just my camera with the lens cover on while traveling. I keep it pretty simple.
Feedback
The best advice I could give anyone is to take plenty of shots. Experiment with different lighting so you know what works best for you. Sometimes, what looks like a great image in the LED window turns out to be a little blurry, or flawed in some other way. I have a huge photo archive, because what seems unusable at the time of shooting can have good qualities when you take another look. It depends on what you're trying to achieve with your shot....and it can also be a matter of time and learning. I keep notes on all the photos I work on, so I know exactly how I arrived at the finished image. Memory can be a fickle thing!
