I was at South Lakes Park in Oklahoma City.Time
This shot was taken at 9:29pm. I met a few friends at the park at 8:30pm to try this and ended up having so much fun that we didn't leave until 2:30am.Lighting
We were at a public park so there were horrible orange lights everywhere. I changed the in-camera White Balance until I found one that cut most of the orange light out. I used no flash because there was enough light already for an 8-10 second exposure.Equipment
I used my Sony a77 with the 18-55mm kit lens. The tripod was a Manfrotto 3021 Pro with a Manfrotto 488RC2 ball head.Inspiration
I have seen this kind of photo for years and just recently started thinking about trying it myself. A photographer friend called to see if I wanted to go out and shoot over the weekend. We eventually decided to try this technique. After buying a couple of packs of "000" steel wool, we headed to the park.Editing
I did some post-processing in Lightroom. Changing the in-camera White Balance reduced the orange light and I corrected the rest in post. I also removed a few "unsightly" pieces of trash on the shoreline and slightly darkened the fence/soccer goals on the right side of the image and added a touch of clearity and vignetting.In my camera bag
My bag usually has a Sony a77 camera, 18-55mm, 75-200mm Sony kit lenses and a 180mm Tamron (dedicated macro) lens. Manfrotto 3021pro tripod with ball-head, and an assortment of filters.Feedback
My advise to someone wanting to try this technique is to be safe and have fun. That being said: you are essentially "playing" with or "flinging" fire/sparks so take care and make sure that you are aware of your surroundings. Don't catch anything of fire! There was a lot of due that kept the grass wet so we did not have to worry about it catching a spark. We pulled apart the "000" steel wool and stuffed it into a whisk then attached the handle of the whisk to a short rope. At the other end of the rope we tied a loop in order to spin it around one finger. I would HIGHLY suggest either wearing a glove to avoid rope burn on said finger (lesson learned) or attach something you can hold onto that will allow the rope to spin freely. We used long "grill" lighters but the wind became an issue. I would recommend using a 9v battery to ignite the steel wool.
