Early morning in a local forrest called the Borkeld.
The Borkeld consists of young forest, high moorland, Leemkuilen, fields, meadows and even a piece of bog. The forest was planted between 1930 and 1950. This is also the largest juniper thickets of the Netherlands. The terrain is hilly, the highest peak, Friezenberg is forty meters, the lowest point on thirteen meters above sea level.
The Borkeld is also an archaeological reserve. 13,000 years ago hunters and gatherers were active here. The evidence left behind by them in the form of stone axes, scrapers and other stone tools. The prehistoric burial mounds and settlement sites found are between 6,000 and 4,000 years old. In 1997 the National Archaeological Heritage restored a dozen burial mounds.
The Leemkuilen in the area are caused by clay extraction for making brick. They are five or more meters deep, and there is a special plant community created by the specific circumstances. In the 18th century there was a tile factory located here whose products are still very popular.
