Behind The Lens

Location

Hi fellow photographers, this image was captured in the garden shed at a friends house. The brush-tail possum had made itself at home in a plastic white bucket laying on its side on some shelving. Coming as a bit of a surprise finding it there, as the shed was quite hot and the day humid.

Time

The time was shortly before lunch toward the end of spring here in the southern hemisphere. So being so early in the day explained why the possum was resting.

Lighting

I was relying on limited day light that was coming through the doorway and due to the angle of the bucket very little light was falling upon the subject. So, I very carefully swiveled the bucket to allow more light to illuminate the scene. Anyhow I was in luck and the possum did not put up too much fuss, as I am aware that some can get quite wild if disturbed.

Equipment

When I initially came to the property, I was planning on capturing macro shots of the gardens; the equipment I had with me was Canon 6D, Tamron 90mm macro lens and a tripod. Due to the Camera not having built in flash, the type of lens I had with me and the tripod of no use due to the difficult access, I was relying on steadying myself against the shelf that the possum was resting and using a rather high ISO 12,800.

Inspiration

Basically I carry a camera with me daily as you never know when, or what you may see during your travels. A possum was not yet in my portfolio, so I made do with what equipment I had with me.

Editing

I shoot in RAW format, so some post processing is always required. Depending on the subject matter it will determine how far the sliders are pushed in Lightroom 6. In this instance with such high ISO, the noise reduction luminescence slider was 29 on the scale. The shadows slider was adjusted to the maximum and other basic minor adjustments were also made.

In my camera bag

If I am travelling I will carry tripod, external flash and a number of lenses Canon 6D and 7D ii.

Feedback

The only improvement I could have done in this instance was to have a external flash but you know, to grab a nice sharp image ideally would have been to have had the camera on tripod, a prime lens, flash, mirror lock-up and remote trigger or use of timer. Oh, must not forget always focus on the eye's. Anyhow thank you for the votes and enjoy your photography experiences.
