This photo was taken on the streets of Salt lake city, Utah on a lazy sunday afternoon in the summer of 2016. I was out with one of my photographer friends with an intent to do street photography. As we were roaming the streets with no luck for a few minutes, we came across this homeless person. We asked him if we could take a few photographs of him since we thought he would be a great subject for close up portraiture and he gladly obliged.Time
This shot was taken around 230 PM on a sunny and hot afternoon.Lighting
This was shot in front of a gas station store in the shadow, with ambient sunlight as the sole light source. No other lighting equipment was used.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D800, with 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. No tripod or flash were used.Inspiration
I have always been interested in portrait photography. The moment i saw this person, for some reason, i thought he would make a perfect subject for portraiture. He had mysterious blue eyes with almost a penetrating look, as if he is looking straight through me. I wanted to get that same look on the photograph to directly connect with the viewer and feel the same. I only focused on his eyes during the entire photography session and when i looked at this particular one after capturing it, i was happy with my efforts and of course, his willingness for the whole process. I really hope that the audience/viewers also gets the same feeling that i went through looking into his really expressive eyes on this photograph.Editing
I processed the RAW image for subtle basic changes like brightness, sharpness, contrast, highlights and shadows on Adobe photoshop 6. I then, processed the image on Nik software to convert it into black and white image. In my camera bag
My Nikon D800 body, Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 and Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8. As i do more of landscape photography than people photography, i carry a collection of Singh ray filters like Vari-N-Trio Variable ND, Mor-Slo 5 and 10 solid ND, Gold N Blue polarizer and my recent addition IR filter. And, of course remote trigger for long exposures.Feedback
As a self taught and still learning photographer, my only advice is to keep taking photographs. Experiment with different compositions, angles and different lighting situations. Focus on the eyes and make the viewer look into the subject's eyes and try to make them feel a connection even though they have never seen them in real life.
